The Behunin Cabin stands next to highway 24 in this sunny little flat spot next to the Fremont River.
It was built by Elijah Cutler Behunin around 1875 and is on the national register of historic places.
Elijah and his wife Tabith Jane raised 10 children in the one room cabin, at least for a while until he
got tired of the river washing out his crops. The adults and babies slept in the cabin, the older boys slept
in a dug out area in the cliffs behind, the older girls made their bed in an old wagon. Not only that,
but the cabin served as the schoolhouse until the Fruita schoolhouse was built in 1896.
