Fairview Peak. It was here that the snow covered land really began.
I've driven US50 across Nevada many, many times and always looked at Nevada 722, a side road that cuts the corner from the shoe tree to Austin. For some reason I had never taken it, for some reason today I did, and what a wonderful little road it turned out to be. The snow was piled up on the sage brush and pine trees.
Up quite high on the first pass I came across these fellows who seemed to fit the place.
Looking west back to the road.
West again from near the summit, the road is visible on the right and lower down in the centre.
On the eastern side the road runs straight down into a lake of snow.
It was Cold down here.
The farm was frozen solid, the temperature was -2F (-19C) when I took these pictures.
A layer of fog hung just above the ground as is quite common in really cold periods here, sometimes it forms 3D swiss cheese patterns about 10 feet above the road.
Smith Creek Dry Lake
There were rabbits everywhere,
they insisted on running down the road at full speed in front of the truck,
not a good survival technique judging by the number that had been killed.
Further east are the highest peaks in Nevada, almost on the Utah border, Wheeler Mountain
Whenever I see this edifice I begin to think I'm getting home, it's at least 150 miles from Torrey but it is quite different from the mountains in Nevada.
