Hiking Wolverine Creek Petrified Wood Area

Wolverine Creek Petrified Wood Natural Area is found several miles south of the Burr Trail after it exits Long Canyon and before it reaches Muley Twist. The dirt road makes a 30 mile loop out to the petrifed wood then back over some hills. In dry conditions it would be driveable in pretty much any SUV but it runs through several wash bottoms so if there has been rain it might not be passable. I used 4x4 in the truck a couple of times though this could probably have been avoided if necessary.

Driving down Long Canyon we were treated to a lovely glowing rock face.

The sun was shining on the opposite side of the canyon and lighting up the shady side in reflection.

The petrified wood occurs at the junction of the red and white layers in the rock, I really should look up what era that is...
