Hiking Wolverine Creek Petrified Wood Area
There are quite a few long sections of complete petrified logs.

The wood is of course rock and has several types of crystals in it.

Softer crystals (amber?) occur in some logs.

After hiking a couple of miles in the woods we decided to go to an arch on Muley Twist, however we were soon sidetracked by
a sign that pointed the opposite direction to Silver Falls. We followed that road for several miles down Silver Falls Creek until
I bashed the bottom on a rather large rock formation and we decided to get out and walk. The canyon went on and on twisting around but
no falls to be seen, it reminded me of that ancient computer game Rogue - you are in a series of caverns, they all look the same.
We hiked for a few miles but decided that it probably ended at the lake and we were a long way from there, in fact the stream enters the Escalante
River and we weren't all that far from that point, no falls though.
The drive out was very scenic, the second half of the loop is more interesting than the first rising over some hills with views of small slot
canyons and the cliffs in the distance. From there we headed down the zig-zags and back along the Notom Road to Capitol Reef and home.
This would be a very, very hot hike in the summer, there is almost no shade out there, just a few cottonwoods in the creek bottoms.
Stumble It!
