Torrey, Utah

In May of 2004 I visited Torrey, Utah with a group of BMW riders, this was my third visit with them and each time I have become more enchanted with the area. This time I came early and spent some time riding my dual sport motorcycle round the dirt roads and trails of the area. Laying in bed one morning at the end of the week in the Chuck Wagon I had something of a vision and came to the conclusion that this was where I wanted to live, I immediately started the process of selling my house in Fallbrook and looked for somewhere here. The market is rather slow but economical so I ended up putting all my stuff in storage after my house sold. After about 6 weeks I noticed this little manufactured house on the edge of town with an acre of land and for a good price. I gradually moved in during the first half of September 2004 and now I live there (here)

The main reason for Torrey's current existence is Capitol Reef National Park, however the town existed long before the park and had a number of names starting with Poverty Flats which is still the name for the valley bottom. It was originally one of a string of towns, Fremont, Loa, Lyman, Bicknell and Torrey which made agricultural use of the Fremont River. The main geographic features around town are Boulder Mountain, Thousand Lake Mountain and the Waterpocket Fold.
